Faith, Anchor of the Soul (1)

The call to live by faith is not a new Testament thing but from the old Testament days…Habakkuk 2:4 says “Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the Just shall live by his faith.”

Hebrews 11:1 has defined Faith as the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hope and faith are technically the same. They both believe in God’s word and promise, they both believe it will come to pass because God says so and they are both unhindered about the physical impracticality of what they believe.
But we will be considering faith/hope as an anchor; the Sailor’s anchor.
Why you might ask.

Hebrews 6 talks about hope in the promises of God that can only be obtained by faith..verse 12 “That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” And then verse 19 says “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;”. We will talk about the veil later.

Do you know what an anchor is or what it looks like? It is define by merriam-webster online dictionary as a device usually of metal attached to a ship or boat by a cable and cast overboard to hold it in a particular place by means of a fluke that digs into the bottom OR a reliable or principal support.
In a nutshell, an anchor is what holds firmly its host to a place or to a thing.

There is an increase in the mention of faith by most people. Expressions like “people of faith”, “faith-based” or “my faith”. It currently means and represents a lot of things and different kinds of people. Even amongst Christians, faith is understood in different ways and applied selectively to certain issues alone.
So what is really Faith? It is what we use to connect and stay connected to another for different purposes. For instance, faith is like the charging USB cord of a phone. We use it to connect the phone to the power outlet to charge the phone or a bridge built to connect one part of the city to the next to enable trade, human communication and travels to take place. Faith is a connect link for different purposes.

So can anyone else have faith? The answer is Yes. Anyone else can have faith. Muslims can have faith, Buddhist can have faith, scientologist can have faith.

The crux of faith is the twin questions of;
What or who is it connected/anchored to?
Why are you connected/anchored to it?

Faith is a connecting tool, an anchor. Faith is nothing all by itself. Its meaningless unanchored . Faith is like a bullet without a gun;it will be just a shiny metal. Useless. Faith cannot stand alone.
For the Christian, the answers are simple but modern day teaching have left many confused.
