Conquering Your Fears 2

Have a past experience or testimony to confront the present source/reason of fear. 1st Samuel 17:34-35, young David tells King Saul about how he killed a lion and in verse 36, he concludes by saying ” Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.”.

No matter how small or childish your experiences are of God’s intervention and help in your times of need and dire circumstances, it will help in encouraging you and giving you the confidence you need. Psalm 103:2 says “Bless the Lord , O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Do not forget how the Lord saved you, blessed you, provided for you, loved you, cared for you, listened to you, answered you, etc. It will make you a grateful and confident person in God. Remember, you can only conquer your fears with and by God alone. Psalm 116:12 says “What shall I render to the Lord For all His benefits toward me?

Remember the chorus in the hymn song ” Count your blessings” by Johnson Oatman Jr.
“Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God has done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

See the fear as a spiritual matter even though it looks or is physical. Yes, the fear might seem very real and obvious to everyone. For instance;

Your examination papers were canceled because the office got burnt and so no admission for you
There is a physical lump on your breast and the result shows it is cancer
Your wife just died, leaving behind chIldren and you have to handle everything alone
You are suddenly a widow with no job, no money but bills to pay, children to feed, rent to pay, etc.
You just lost your job and no present means of survival.

All these and more are real, physical and tangible sources of fear. They are everyday issues to diverse persons in diverse places and probably they might have been solved by physical means by others but for you believer, address it from the spiritual because you know better. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”.

Though those issues seem physical, we(believers) know that it’s root cause is always spiritual. Again, back to 1st Samuel 17, to fight a Goliath(your fear), David was given a physical tool to fight in verse 38 “So Saul clothed David with his armor, and he put a bronze helmet on his head; he also clothed him with a coat of mail.” But David realised this physical approach will not defeat his fear and so in verse 45-47 David applied the spiritual approach “Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord ’s, and He will give you into our hands.”

After the above two factors are firmly in place, the next step to conquering your fear is to charge/address and attack your fear head on and straight on. Do not entertain doubts or procrastination. Do not be lazy or nonchalant about it. If you have fear of flying, book a flight. If you lost a job, get dressed and go look for a better one. If your health results are bad, believe God, declare His word and continue living your life to the full. Do not let your ill health report stop you from living a full rich life in Christ.

Remember, no one says it will be easy being in love again either when a spouse dies or an abusive spouse leaves, or rejoice with confidence when the rent is near and the children school fees is overdue and yet no job, or smile and hope when your failing health makes living a nightmare and death imminent, etc. No, it will not be easy but it is doable and conquering that fear is possible only in the name of JESUS.
