I love seeing movies but I am not critic. I love super hero movies like Marvel Movies or DC Movies. Ironman or Superman kind of movies. Movies that take you into a universe of impossibilities and powers and flying men and women. It’s childish but it’s not complicated but intriguing.
But I have learnt one important thing about Hollywood. Whenever Hollywood desires to produce a movie that has a God theme or Bible based, I am always very careful to tell myself that the purpose of the movie is always to discredit God’s existence and His Word or/and ridicule God at the end of it. The purpose of such movies is exactly what Satan told mother Ever in the garden in Genesis Chapter 3 “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ” “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
If you are not a Bible student, watching a gospel/christian based Hollywood movie will completely mislead you and rob you of your salvation. So, whenever I see a Hollywood movie with a God theme, my red flags go up and my caution alarms go off.
One of such movies is “Yes, God, Yes”. The movie is summarily about a Christian girl(Alice) from a Christian home, attending a Christian school but struggling with lust(masturbation) until she attends a camp organised by the school where she sees one of the camp leaders(Nina) having sex with a boy while insisting on a godly way of life for the other students. Alice finally finds out that everyone else is having some inner struggles or the other as she is, especially the Reverend Father whom see saw watch porn and rather stopped feeling guilty about such lust, becomes emboldened to dive into masturbating with a sense of justification. That is after she subtly blackmails the Reverend Father during a confession session.
The movie tries to characterize the church as being hypocritical (Reverend Father watching Porn) whilst preaching holiness and righteousness and fraudulent (Nina who was having sex with a boy) while insisting on a strict life at the camp in other to attain a pure and holy relationship with God.
So what is wrong about this movie. 1st Corinthians 1:23-25 says “but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
Acts 5:42 says “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.”
Acts 2:36 says “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
2nd Corinthians 4:5 says “For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.”
- These scriptures and many more makes it clear that we preach Jesus and Jesus alone…1st Corinthians 3:11… “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” And Acts 4:12…. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”. The good news is about Jesus and not about ourselves.
Who died for us? Jesus
Who saved us? Jesus
Who redeemed us? Jesus
Who is interceding for is before God Almighty? Jesus
Who forgives our sins? Jesus
Who delivers us from sin? Jesus
Who loves us? Jesus
Who did God Almighty say we should listen to in Matthew 17:5? Jesus
I could go on and on and the answer will still be Jesus and Jesus alone.
Part 2 of Hollywood and God coming soon
