The second reason is that God is really indeed good…Psalm 34:8 says “Taste and see the Lord is good; blessed is the One who takes refuge in Him”. I will explain it with the Tower of babel event. In Genesis 11 the people came together and developed the technology of bricks making and further improved on it by creating the technology of building a skyscraper. They also came up with the idea of a city state and governance system that will make it a great place to stay. Now my readers, what’s wrong with these thought and ventures? I see nothing wrong with it.
From verse 6, when the Lord came down and saw the City and the Tower, the Lord said “behold, they are One people and they have all One language and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them”. Dear reader is there something wrong with being united and achieving the impossible? Is Unity and seeking to advance your collective welfare a sin? I don’t think so.
I have heard some argue that it was because they did not acknowledge God in all their endeavors… Hmmm!!!!, very true
I have also heard some argue that God wanted man to disperse and fill the earth and not to be centered in One place… Hmmm!!!!, Ok… though they still would have grown bigger and bigger as a City and still fill the earth…but let’s just say Ok to this thought.
I will naturally go with the former but confusing them and dispersing them is not the solution or is it? Maybe or maybe not, only God knows. I don’t know how bringing a people to a state of confusion which in turn creates disunity amongst them would ensure their recognition and acceptance of God but again I am not God and He indeed can make the impossible possible and call forth things that are not as if they were. He is the awesome God. Sovereign Lord and maker of all things visible and invisible. Author of life, Savior of our souls, our glory and lifter up of our heads. The I AM THAT I AM…. I could go on and on and on and on and still not come close to fully describing how great is our God.
I have been thinking about that scripture above for a while and then I decided to use the “God is good lenses” to view the Tower of Babel event and was shocked to see another reason why God had to do what He did.
Determination and persistence without God is equal to foolish stubbornness. Let’s do a little geographical science.
The atmosphere is made up of Four layers namely;
- The Troposphere
- The Stratosphere
- The Mesosphere
- The Thermosphere
Each are separated by temperature changes.
The Troposphere is the closest to the earth surface and that is where you and I live and can breathe easily. When you start going higher, the next layer is the stratosphere.
The Stratosphere is the layer where Airplanes fly. At this layer, the air here is very thin and it is extremely cold. This makes for difficulty in breathing. It is the upper part of this layer that you find the Ozone layer. The Ozone layer absorbs ultraviolet radiation from the sun. These layer is unsafe for the human living.
Without stressing more than is required, the next Two “higher” layers in ascending order are The Mesosphere and The Thermosphere. This layers are a No-No to any living creature.
Back to the Tower of Babel event and by now you see where I am going. Permit me to say “these guys were going to kill themselves simpliciter”. They were heading towards death and destruction by the thought and creation of their own hand and making. It’s a common sense thing that every generation would want to surpass the achievements of the previous. Upcoming generations of these people would have kept on building the Tower until they get to The Stratosphere and probably The Mesosphere where they will all die. Because of their foolishness and stubbornness, they would not understand it even if God spent time explaining it. Look at Jesus, He did so many miracles, taught God’s word so many times, in many different places and through many different methods including direct words from God and parables that were convincing and certain that God sent Him yet they still refused to believe, accept and change.
This understanding now explains why God will confuse them so no other future generation would be unity to restart the building at any time or will be able to explain to One another the blueprint of the Tower so they can replicate same in other places. This makes all the sense.
At the Tower of Babel, God saved us from ourselves. It wasn’t anger from/of God. In Romans 8:14 the Bible says “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God” and John 10:27 says “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” … Those people were not led by the Holy Spirit to build the Tower. The idea was great but the inspiration was not from God…Proverbs 14:12 says “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death” and It was that “death” God was trying to save them from.
Have you ever seen a baby crawling towards a sharp object and the mom/dad quickly pick’s him/her up? What is always the reaction of the babies? They cry but do their parents let them go on towards the sharp object because of the cry? No of course. This is LOVE.
Using the “God is good lenses”, I have now come to see the reason why God reacted that way and why He is still reacting that same way to all your(my) plans, thoughts and actions that He has not approved for your(my) life because He is the beginning and the ending, He has seen a disastrous end to your(my) actions and plans.
He Loves you.
