They say there is a thin line between love and hate. Why?
I believe it’s because of two things; the first is that they both reside in the heart of Man and both determine the mode and outcome of his relationships…
What about Humility and Pride? Can we say there is a thin line between Humility and Pride?
Like love and hate whose practical application, despite it variants, are easier to identify or observe, Humility and Pride have same similarities and Yes, they too both reside in the heart of Man but determine his relevance on earth; his estimation in different ways.
Humility and Pride are the products of Worth/Value
If I asked you whether you are valuable or worthy, would your reply be characterized as being humble or proud?
What is Worth? This is defined as the quality that renders something desirable or valuable or useful.
What is Value? It’s the quality that renders something desirable or valuable and being valuable means having worth or merit or value.
Now Humility is the quality of having a modest or low view of one’s importance whilst Pride on the other hand is defined as unreasonable and inordinate self-esteem OR a feeling of self-respect and personal worth.
Whilst hate has its good but limited applications like;
Psalm 26:5… “I hate the assembly of evildoers, and I will not sit with the wicked”…..
Psalm 97:10… “O you who love the LORD, hate evil! He
preserves the lives of his saints; he delivers them from the hand of the wicked.” …
Ecclesiastes 3:8…. “A time to love, and a time to hate; a time for
war, and a time for peace.”
Pride on the other hands is completely destructive;
1st John 2:16.. “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh,
and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Hosea 5:5… And the pride of Israel doth testify to his face:
therefore shall Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity; Judah also shall fall with them.
Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty
spirit before a fall.
In my earlier write-up, I have warned and tried to avoid the pit fall of substituting God’s definition of His created concepts with limited human views. For instance, our definition of love is different from God’s; our definition of worship and money is completely different from God’s. Same with our definition of Humility and Pride vis-à-vis God’s.
To better appreciation God’s definition of Humility and Pride, we need to go to the beginning but in summary.
