Standing before an audience between the ages of 7 to 15 years old in a modern world with it’s new age social media language, I wonder how to effectively communicate what God has laid in my heart to say; John 17:3. “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent”
Yes, Colossians 4:3 is right “Withal praying also for us; that God would open unto us a door of utternace, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am in bonds:”
In the Message Translation it says “Pray diligently. Stay alert with your eyes wide open in gratitude. Don’t forget to pray for us, that God will open doors for telling the mystery of Christ even while I am locked up in this jail. Pray that every time I open my mouth I will be able to make Christ plain as day to them”
To address John 17:3 directly to my teenage audience might be a lot to chew at once, so I will address it from the concepts of Knowledge and Wisdom and end unusually with a question.
Amongst the youths and young people, words like knowledge and wisdom is a bit ancient, bible-ish and abstract to their everyday life, experience and language. A look at Facebook and WhatsApp will give you an idea of what I am saying.
In modern teenage language, there are two words that seem to properly represent knowledge and wisdom and they are Intelligent and Smart…Let’s make the connection by defining them.
What is knowledge? It’s facts, information and skills acquired through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject…in a nutshell, knowledge is being intelligent..Being intelligent is knowing stuff more than others. So in a classroom, the student who scores an A or B in his/her assignments or exam sheets is intelligent or if you win competition (like Spelling Bee), they say you are intelligent because you know more than others.
What is wisdom? The quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgement; the quality of being wise. This on the other hand is not just knowing stuff but knowing how and when to use the stuff you know…this is being smart. So this is about knowing how to use the stuff you. For instance I know that to bake a cake you need flour and eggs(amongst other things)…that is knowledge…that is being intelligent. But to know when to mix them together and what quantity and quality is required is wisdom…that is being smart.
So there are three kinds of people;
1. Intelligent People
2. Smart People.
3. People who are both intelligent and smart.
So it’s possible that I can be intelligent but not smart. For instance I can know a Mathematical Formula (so I am intelligent in Maths) but I might not know how to use it to solve an equation(so I am not smart in Maths). … Hmm!!!, Confusing? That’s why we go to school to learn how to be intelligent and smart at the same time.
Now when we come across someone who knows stuff more than others(intelligent) and also can use what he/she knows to get desired and designed results, we say the person is a professional and qualified to handle or lead issues in that area of life but when we encounter people who are intelligent and have further more created unanticipated and humanly impossible outcomes from their intelligence, we call them “Genus”. Like Albert Einstein, Michael Faraday, Isaac Newton and Leonardo Da Vinci.
Now take a good and hard look around you, start from yourself. Look at the clothes you are wearing, your shoes, school bags, books(both notebooks and textbooks)…Look at the house you live in, your parents car and if the don’t have one, the bus you take to school…Look at you school…Some people made your clothes, some people made your shoes, school bags; some people wrote your textbooks…some people designed and built your house, the car or the bus…some people built and designed your school curriculum and management…
Amongst all these people are the intelligent ones who have the knowledge to think first and then design everything and then there are the smart people who use the knowlege( design) of the intelligent to make and create all we see, experience and enjoy. The man who makes the wood is not the same that builds the roof and the man who made the paper is not the same as the author of the text in the paper. Intelligent and smart people make and create things that we see and are benefitial to us all… Intelligent people designed a rocket, smart people built the rocket… science, technology, arts, inventions, innovations, etc all are the product of intelligent and smart people.
One common things about intelligent and smart people is that they always seem to have answers and solutions to the problem everyone else is worried about. So when we have a problem, we go to or wait for the person we think is intelligent and smart to solve the problem. Have you head your mom, dad or people generally say “don’t worry, when Michael returns he will know what to do about it” Or “if only David was here, he will know what we ought to do”…Like the Sons of Issachar in 1st Chronicles 12:32…the Bible said about them this… “From Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do…” But is it really true that intelligent and smart people always have answers and solutions to every problem?
