So, now to believers; When, Where and Why did giving to God become an established term of relationship between I AM THAT I AM and Man. The “When” question is very important and it all started in the very beginning i.e. in the book of Genesis Chapter 4 verses 3 and 4;
“3: And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
4: And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
Prior to these verses, there is no record of Adam teaching the children the act of giving or having an example of God’s demands on him to give. Cain and Abel made (gave) sacrifices to God; why? You cannot know what you were not taught. There is no record that God demanded sacrifice from Cain and Abel first before they offered those sacrifices. Adam taught his two sons something about giving to God but what was it? Judging by the experiences from Genesis Chapter One till Chapter Four, we can safely say Adam taught his sons to give to God out of gratitude, appreciation and love hence the Scripture says “God loves a cheerful giver”…2nd Corinthians 9:7.
Abraham went to war in Genesis 14 to recover his brother Lot and when he succeeded, Abraham gave a Tithe (Ten Percent) of the spoils of the war to Melchizedek (the Priest whose description fits that of I AM THAT I AM and whose Order of Priesthood is likened Jesus priesthood). Question; who asked Abraham to give tithe to the Priest? And why did he give the Tithe?
Answer: nobody asked Abraham to give the tithe to the Priest and to the reason for giving; it was in pure gratitude and appreciation to God for giving him victory at the war.
In Genesis 28, God appeared to Jacob in a dream and made certain promises to him and when he work up he made certain vows to God including in verse 22 the vow to tithe all he had to God.
Again who asked Jacob to make such a vow? Nobody. Why did Jacob make such a vow? In gratitude and appreciation to the promises God made to him in the dream. Did God request for the tithe? No.
Man started giving financially to God because God had been/being giving to him in every way possible and impossible and so God’s subsequent direct demand for it especially in the Popular book of Malachi 3 is an attempt by God to revive His love relationship between us and Him which is solely based on His benevolence, love, charity, faithfulness and mercy to/towards us and not on anything we have done or we can do because like Isaiah 64:6 says in part “…and all our righteousness’s are as filthy rags;”.
I AM SAYING THAT GOD’s DEMAND FOR A GIFT OR SACRIFICE FROM US IS NOT TO DETERMINE WHETHER HE WILL BLESS US OR NOT OR TO DETERMINE THE QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF THE BLESSING (IF ANY).
NO, HE HAS ALREADY DONE THAT BY HIMSELF AND FOR HIMSELF…Ephesians 1: 3 “Blessings be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with ALL spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ”(emphasis mine)
IT IS TO CONFIRM AND FLOURISH AN ALREADY EXISTING RELATIONSHIP WITH US WHICH IS BASED ON HIS KIND OF LOVE (AGAPE LOVE) AND NOT TO CREATE ONE.
That is why Jesus’ encounter with Peter in John chapter 21 is very instructive. Jesus asked Peter thrice whether Peter loved Him (He wanted to know whether Peter knew He, Jesus loved/loves him unconditionally and same was required from Peter) and on the three occasions, He asked him to make the sacrifice of time, energy and attention to his kingdom (based on that existing relationship of love)
So as a believer, if your giving is not based on gratitude, appreciation and love for and towards God through Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit, then I can sadly tell you that you are been ungrateful and you are wasting your time and money.
As an unbeliever, your giving regardless of how noble, righteous, honorable and holy as it might seem or intended is a big and huge waste of time if you do not give your life to Jesus first.
If you want something from God, just ask as stated in Matthew 7:7 according to His Will which can be understood by His Word(Bible)and then believe/have faith that that which you asked for shall be given…and patiently wait for it.
