“Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip”
2nd Peter 1:12
“Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things though ye know them and be established in the present truth”
“I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterwards destroyed them that believed not”
Brethren, these scriptures and many others especially in the new testaments after the departure of the Lord Jesus Christ, constantly talked about “remembrance”. So what is remembrance? Remembrance as used in/by the King James Version actually means to being reminded of a thing.
Being reminded of a thing implies that you knew the thing before or you had a prior knowledge of the thing or issue. We all are lawyers and so it should be easy for us to understand. Take the instance of writing a letter for briefing or more information as the case may be. The first letter brings the information fresh but when it is ignored or assumed forgotten, another letter having the same details is sent and titled “reminder”
These raises the following observations:
1. A reminder has the same exact nature of the very first information
2. A reminder might have more details but they are still connected to the issues contained in the first information
3. There will be no need for a reminder, if the first set of information was adhered to and executed.
This further underscores the need to study regularly because of the human nature of forgetfulness; “out of sight been out of mind” …the Lord is not physically around, your pastor does not follow you around, your mentor-in-Christ (if you have any) has other people to mentor and so is not around, the church is not around and yet you are required to stand for Christ. There is a tendency for you in your personally life to forget what you have learnt hence we are admonished in Joshua 1:8 “This Book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shall meditate therein day and night…” So we do not need them to be reminded always about our walk/work with Lord.
Also Matthew 13:22 reveals another scenario that might makes us forget “He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word and he becometh unfruitful” …Mark 4:19… the pursuit of the materials wealth and the thought that being wealthy will ensure your happiness and fulfillment in life. Yes, money indeed answereth all things but the love of it is the root of evil…we should love God with all our heart, soul and might
And so HOW do we remember or HOW do we remind ourselves?
2nd Timothy 3:10 “But continue thou in the things which thou has learnt and has been assured of, knowing of whom thou has learned them”
This was the admonition Paul was giving to timothy. He was reminding Timothy to continue in the things which he had learnt and was assured of. So what are the things we have learnt? It is important to know what you have learnt because knowing what you have learnt will lead you to knowing whom you learnt them from. Whom you learnt them from is very crucial and key to either your succeeding the Christian walk with God or failing. It tells you whether you are walking right or wrong. Matthew 11:29 says “Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls”
So if you desire rest which only God can give, then you must learn from God and God alone and not man, hence the scripture in 2nd Timothy 2:15 admonishes “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”
Also HOW are you assured? Assurance connotes certainty and those come in the form of Testimonies. What are those testimonies you have heard or have happened in your life that has created a sure certainty over the things you have learnt? This begs the question; what kind of testimonies do you listen to? King James version calls them “Reports”. So what reports are you listening to? There are “False Reports” …Exodus 23:1; there are ‘Evil Reports” … Numbers 13:31; there are “True Reports” …2nd Chronicles 9:5; there are “Good Report” …Proverbs 15:30; there are “Honest Reports” … Acts 6:3… In whose report do you listen? Because that will form your believe and assurances.
But remember that as per personal testimony, you can never have testimonies without been tested first. That is why James 1:2 says “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations…” because your testing produces testimonies that in turn produces assurances.
Now it is important to know and understand these two things (what we have learnt and what we are assured of) …. One way to do so is to check what your “Heart” is full of. Proverbs 4:23 “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life”.
Matthew 12:34 “O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh…”
Romans 10:10 “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation”
The content of your heart exposes what you have really learnt and whom you learnt it from. It further exposes what you are assured of.
As earlier mentioned, assurances connotes certainty and also Faith hence Hebrews 10:22 “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith…” we are assured also of our faith in Christ… Romans 1:17 “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, The just shall live by faith…” and the just live by faith victoriously, he overcomes the challenges of life… 1st John 5:4 “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world; and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith”
So WHAT have we learnt? We have learnt from God;
• Victory in Christ
• Forgiveness of Sin
And many more and we are assured that what we have heard and seen God do in the lives of believers as testimonies will keep us on the track to making heaven and fulfilling destiny on earth when effectively mixed with our “undying” Faith in Jesus alone.
God bless us.
