The General Will of God are His commands, words, acts, re-actions, instructions, covenants, rules, regulations, admonitions and thoughts that tends only to Holiness and Righteousness, all written down in only One Book; the Bible in 2nd Timothy 3:16 says “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”. The Bible gives us God’s perspective and expectation on every and all issues of life which is meant to shape and transform our thoughts and subsequent actions and reactions toward the same pattern and level with God’s… Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
We achieve this by studying and mediating on God’s Word in the Bible alone…Joshua 1:8 “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success”… 2nd Corinthians 3:18 “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”… 2nd Timothy 2:15 “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”.
For example “Truth” and “Lying”; these two concepts are over-emphasized from two perspectives namely, His personality and Will. There are plethora of verses about God’s Truthful character:
He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he”.
All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
And the scriptures (verses) concerning His Will on the above mentioned twin concepts amongst many are:
He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit.
That the LORD may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
By the above, we as God’s children are meant to be truthful people and every time and in every circumstance, occasion or place (no matter how dire or life-threatening it might be) we ought and must always say the truth even if it brings us condemnation, punishment, loss or even death.
What about love or loving? By creating us in His own image and likeness and giving us life and granting us the authority and dominion over the works of His hands, he showed “beyond any doubt” that He love us… Genesis 1:26 “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth”… and after the fall of Man, Him still sending His Son to die for us thereby giving us life more abundantly (eternal life), proves eternally and assuredly that more than we can ever imagine that God loves us … John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Even when we were/are undeserving of His love, God still loved/loves us unconditionally…Roman 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”… Hosea 14:4 “I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him” and so God’s Will is for us to also love Him unconditionally according to Mathew 22:37 “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”… Deuteronomy 6:5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” To love what He loves and hate what He hates…… Amos 5:15 “Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate…” Mathew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you…. Mathew 19: 19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
Also to love people unconditionally, hence 1st Corinthians Chapter 13 and not to love once in a while or occasionally but always … John 15:9 “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.”… John 15:17 “These things I command you, that ye love one another.”
All these and many more life issues and concepts like healthy living, helping others(being charitable), fear, faith, trust, etc are the General Will of God and the only way to know them is by reading, studying, meditating and doing the word of God written in the Bible.
We will be discussing the Specific Will of God on the next article.
